Arsenal have been given a boost in their pursuit of midfielder Mikel Merino, with Real Sociedad prepared to sell him on the right terms.
The Gunners have been linked with a bid for the Spain international, who was part of the Euro 2024-winning squad and has impressed in La Liga since returning to his home country from Newcastle United in 2018.
Mikel Arteta has seen his squad strengthened by the arrival of defender Riccado Calafiori, and last season’s Premier League runners-up are expected to make further signings before the transfer window closes.
Merino has long been a reported target, and Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay has admitted the club could be forced into a sale if the 28-year-old does not decide to sign a new contract.

Real Sociedad could sell Merino if he doesn’t renew his contract
“We are aware that Merino has offers,” he said, according to Mundo Deportivo.
“The conversation with him and those around him has been very sincere and I hope his decision is to stay. He already knows we want him to stay.
“He has had a renewal offer for some time. And if not, we will try to negotiate the best exit for Real.
“The club has to look to the future, try to be stronger every year or every day. You don’t have to hide behind a contract when a player says he wants to take an opportunity. Daily work makes us stronger.”
