Liverpool are reportedly working on a £75m deal business for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon until the Magpies folded.
Gordon, who spent 11 years at Everton, was part of Liverpool’s academy at the start of his footballing journey and has been heavily linked with the Reds throughout the summer as they look to rejuvenate their squad for new manager Arne Slot.
The 23-year-old would have bolstered the left flank, where Luis Diaz has struggled to recover from his brilliant start and Darwin Nunez is a square player in a round hole.
O Liverpool Echo reported that a deal for Gordon worth £75 million had been agreed with Newcastle. That package included a move for Joe Gomez to St James’ Park, valued at £45 million of the total.
The reason Newcastle considered letting Gordon, last season’s top scorer of 11 Premier League goals, leave the club was due to concerns over compliance with the Profit and Sustainability Rules. But where Liverpool were apparently willing to move on, Newcastle pulled out as they found other ways to get their finances in order. It’s worth noting that Elliott Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were sold for £35m each to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively at the end of June.
It means Liverpool are still waiting to add to Jurgen Klopp’s squad, which finished third in the Premier League last season, seven points behind Arsenal and nine behind Manchester City.
With Liverpool keen to sell Gomez, the failed transfer also puts his long-term future at Anfield into question. He proved invaluable last season, operating at left-back and right-back at various points in the campaign due to injuries to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.
RB Leipzig full-back Mohamed Simakan is one defensive option the Reds have been linked with.
